Use a clarifying shampoo or Blue Dawn dish soap to prepare your hair for hair extensions. Please wash your hair before your application appointment - not the night before! This is essential step to ensure proper application. Do not use any conditioner or apply any styling products including oil.
Keep in mind that hair extensions, although made of human hair, will not last forever. Try shampooing and conditioning your hair 2 to 3 times a week. Because there is no root, there is no source of moisture or nutrients. This means that excessive use of heating tools such as blow dryers, curling irons and straightening irons will shorten the life of your hair extensions. If you want to make your extensions last, you should use a heat protectant before styling your hair. Living Proof dry shampoo is highly recommended if you have oily hair or need to wash your hair more than 3 times a week. It will instantly make your hair look and feel clean and fresh without having to wash it!

Wash your hair thoroughly before installing the hair extensions and follow the rigid aftercare routine recommended by your stylist. Despite knowing that itchiness is a common aftermath of hair extensions, many people still wonder why it happens. There are various reasons behind this problem and may vary depending on the person. Light itchiness that happens after the first few days is normal and should not be a cause for concern.
That said, below are 3 reasons commonly associated with itchy hair extensions:
1. Sensitive scalp
Usually, if you have a sensitive scalp, the itchiness will occur even if it’s your first time having hair extensions. If you have never dealt with dandruff and the extensions are installed properly, then it’s just your sensitive scalp adjusting to the additional strain on your head. Normally, the itchiness is just mild and will subside after a few days. Also, make sure that you are using the appropriate aftercare routine for your hair.
2. Product build-up
When you have hair extensions, you must properly wash and rinse your hair to get rid of all the products. In doing so, you help prevent product build-up on your hair extensions and scalp.
3. Excessive sweating
If you regularly go to the gym or exercises a lot, you may notice that your head gets itchier as you sweat. This is due to the amount of sweat that sits on your scalp and gets trapped on your hair extensions. The extra weight from the extensions produces additional heat, which contributes to more sweating. The itching can be annoying if you wait too long between washes, which is why it is recommended that you wash your hair more frequently than usual.
You can wash as normal, but make sure to really scrub and get in there to remove any oil buildup. Always condition from mid-length throughout ends; any conditioner is left over on your hands can be applied to the top of your head, however, don't take conditioner and apply directly on the tape. You should always properly rinse your hair thoroughly to avoid any buildup, and if you happen to have some residue, we highly recommend a clarifying shampoo to remove any excess oils. It's recommended to gently squeeze any excess water from your hair to avoid towel drying, which can ruffle the cuticle. Please wait 3 days to wash your hair after the installation.
Braid hair into one loose braid or ponytail. Never sleep on wet hair, always make sure hair is completely dry before going to bed.
Wash your hair after exercise, swimming etc. It is recommended to wear your hair up or in a ponytail when you swim or exercise.
Hair Shedding Process:
On average we lose around 50-100 hairs per day as part of this natural process. However, when you are wearing hair extensions, shed hair that would normally come out in your brush or in the shower, will still be attached to the extension and will not come out until the extension is removed. When the hair extensions are removed, the shed hair is combed out and it appears as though a lot of hair is coming out all at once. There is no need to be concerned that your hair is falling out during the removal process, as this is simply the naturally shed hair being released.
BRUSHING YOUR EXTENSIONS:
Soft bristle wet brush is recommended as it is more gentle on the hair. Do not brush hair extensions when wet because it results in more breakage at the root and hair shaft. The safest way to brush your hair is to dry at least 90% and always apply a thermal spray to protect your hair.
