BEFORE YOU HAVE YOUR HAIR EXTENSIONS CONSULTATION

Before you seek a hair extensions consultation you will need to ensure that your hair is your preferred colour. This means that if you dye your hair, you will need to seek an appointment with your colourist before scheduling your hair extensions appointment. The reason for this is that during a hair extension consultation a colour match will take place, and therefore your hair colour will need to be the exact colour you want, as the extensions will be matched accurately to this shade. If colouring your hair before your hair extension consultation, be sure to do this a week or so earlier than your consultation is booked for. Often when colouring your hair the colour can take a few days to adjust, for example if you dye your natural brown hair a darker shade of brown, often the colour is slightly darker for the first few days. After a few washes however it will settle down to your usual tone, and this is the time in which the colour is at its best for a colour match. Having a colour match the same day as your hair dye appointment may results in the extensions being darker than your hair on the day of the installation.

Can I use purple shampoo on my extensions?

For blondes, a common issue even without wearing extensions is the tendency for your colour to turn brassy around the time in which you need it redone. Using a purple shampoo on your hair is usually the answer to this, and this can also be applied to the hair extensions once per week. It is worth noting that hair extensions tend to be a lot more porous in general, therefore washing the purple shampoo out quickly will be key.

Can I bleach/highlight Glam Fairy extensions?

We do not recommend bleaching/highlighting our hair extensions. Regardless of how high the quality of our extensions are, bleach can still damage them to the point of no repair.

Why is my damaged hair not suitable for hair extensions?

There is a distinct difference between damaged hair, and hair that is too damaged for hair extensions, so don’t worry, having damaged hair does not necessarily mean you can’t have hair extensions. With the use of hair dryers, straighteners, curling tongs and hair dyes, to some extent we all have damaged hair, it is only in the extreme cases where hair extensions may not be suitable, and there are 2 main reasons for this. These are that the hair may be unable to support the weight of the new hair extensions because it is too weak, or you are not in a position to be able to care for the hair extensions correctly at this moment in time. NOT ABLE TO CARE FOR YOUR HAIR EXTENSIONS If your hair has become damaged because you do not have enough time to care for it correctly, for example very tangled/matted hair or extremely over processed hair, this may mean that you are not suitable for hair extensions as they do require a certain degree of aftercare to maintain. It is important to discuss in detail with your hair extension fitter what is involved in looking after hair extensions on a daily basis to ensure you are committed to the new hair, and are able to look after it correctly. Check out our top tips for keeping your hair extensions in perfect condition in Hair Care page to see if you think you could commit to these basic steps in hair extension aftercare.

Is my hair too weak for hair extensions?

Hair becomes weak when it has been exposed to an extreme amount of external pressure in the form of heated styling tools and hair dyes. The most common example of hair that could be too weak for hair extensions is over bleached hair. If your hair has been over bleached, and this has caused your hair to change in texture and snap off, your hair may not be able to comfortably support hair extensions. Ideally, you should wait until it is healthy again before going ahead with hair extensions.

Will hair extensions fit in with my lifestyle?

Before having hair extensions installed an important question you should ask yourself before hand is whether or not hair extensions will fit in with your lifestyle, and what you should expect from your hair extensions depending on your general daily activities. This may come as a surprise, but not all lifestyles will be compatible with hair extensions, therefore it is important that you consider all factors before going ahead to ensure it is the right choice for you. There are many different lifestyle choices that can have an impact on hair extensions, and unfortunately we are not able to list them all, however we will outline some of the most common aspects that can impact on how long your extensions will last, daily care etc. HAIR EXTENSIONS AT THE GYM If you are a gym addict, or at least attend a few times a week you will need to consider the impact this will have on your hair extensions. Although it is absolutely fine to go to the gym whilst wearing hair extensions, it will mean that you are likely to need to wash your hair slightly more often than is recommended, purely due to the amount of sweating your hair is likely to be exposed to. It is usually recommended that hair extensions are washed 2-3 times a week, therefore managing your gym sessions around times in which yours hair extensions are due to be washed will help to reduce over washing, which can strip hair of its natural oils and be very time consuming. HAIR EXTENSIONS AND SWIMMING If you are a regular swimmer you will need to wash your hair extensions after swimming. Chlorine can over time cause hair extensions to become dry or brittle. HAIR EXTENSIONS & PONYTAILS If you are required to secure your hair back for work you will still be able to do this whilst wearing hair extensions, however you will need to think up some creative hairstyles to ensure you do not put regular pressure on the tapes in the same areas. Mixing up your hair styles and wearing in a looser position you should be able to avoid this from happening. WEARING HAIR EXTENSIONS WITH A BUSY LIFESTYLE If you are short on time in the mornings, managing a young family, busy career etc before embarking on hair extensions you will need to think about the time is takes to manage and care for your new hair to make sure you will be able to commit the level of care that is required. Hair extensions do not take a great deal of time to manage in the morning, but it will be longer than your current routine, and you will find you are more restricted than you are used to. Examples of this would be not being able to sleep with your hair wet or damp, making sure you are brushing your hair regularly, only washing 2-3 times a week etc. As long as you feel these daily chores can easily slot into your life, then hair extensions will still be suitable for you. Once you have taken all of this into consideration you will be ready for your new set of extensions, and within a matter of weeks you will wonder how you ever managed without them!

Are tape-in extensions good for fine/thin hair?

Tape in hair extensions are the BEST for women with thin or fine hair. The tape wefts and thin and lightweight, leaving no damage.

Can I remove extensions at home?

Not recommended! If you do remove them at home, please do not use oil on the extensions. Use isopropyl alcohol. Saturate the whole row with rubbing alcohol, wait a minute or two and then separate the tapes. You can use oil to brush out the tape residue and shedding hair from your natural hair. *We are not responsible for hair loss due to hair extension removal outside of Glam Fairy salon. We recommend that you have this service done professionally at our salon.
